Choosing the Right Decking for Your Climate

You have to choose the right decking material for your outdoor space and this has to be done by considering how the material is able to withstand your regional climate. There are different challenges posed by different climates and this will include changesin moisture levels temperature fluctuations, and sunlight exposure.

When it comes to decking Melbourne, you have to assess the climate in your area and think about how it affects the decking material. The range of temperatures that the decking will experience all throughout the year has to be considered. Expansion and contraction of certain materials are affected by extreme heat or cold. The humidity levels should beassessed as well. When there is high humidity, you will have to deal withmould, mildew, and rot of the wrong decking material is selected. The amount of sunlight received by the decking has to be considered as well. If there is intense sun exposure, some materials will show fading, warping, or cracking. There are many types of decking and the most traditional option is wood. This includes cedar, redwood, or tropical hardwoods. This is a material that will provide character and warmth. But this will need regular maintenance such as sealing or staining so that you can betterprotect it against UV radiation and moisture. Hardwoods have higher resistance to insects and moisture so you can choose them for humid climates.

Composite decking has a blend of wood fibres and recycled plastic.

These are low maintenance and durable. They are able to resist fading, moisture and rot so you can use it in a variety of climates. But there are some composites that can retain heat in direct sunlight. PVC decking is resistant to moisture, mould and mildew. It is lightweight and durable. You don’t need to stain or seal it but it tends to becomehot when there is direct sunlight. You can use it in humid climates but you cannot expect it to have the natural appearance of wood. Plastic decking is also lightweight and you will need minimal maintenance. There are many styles and coloursavailable. Aluminium decking is also resistant to insects and moisture while being lightweight and durable. It is cool in sunlight but it is more expensive. If you are looking for a modern industrial look, this is a good option.

You have to think about maintenance requirements when choosing decking.

Wood will need regular sealing or staining so that it can be protected against UV rays, moisture and insects. Low maintenancerequirements can be enjoyed with composite decking. It is resistant to mould, fading and staining. Minimal maintenance is needed for PVC and plastic and you can clean it with soap and water. When it comes to durability, hardwoods are naturally durable. You will need more maintenance for softwoods. Durability is high with composite, PVC and plastic decking. Make sure you test for heat retention in the decking when installing in hot climates. You can install awnings, pergolas and umbrellas to provide shade to the decking as well.
